Chase Family Church has been offering Mentoring to follow Jesus @ Chase since 2005 and many people have been blessed and encouraged as they have participated in it.

Biblical Background

Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:18-20

What is Mentoring?

If we take seriously the authority of Jesus and his command for us to preach the gospel to the world and to baptise believers then we must also recognize the need to help those believers to grow in grace. (II Peter 3:18) Jesus taught his disciples by separating them from the crowd and having a personal relationship with them. He taught them in a private and personal context where they could have dialogue with him. We seek to use that model in so far as it is appropriate.

Mentoring is about pointing others to Jesus, to follow and be His disciples. Our aim for all those we mentor is that they have an intimate relationship with God through Jesus.

Our calling as Mentors is to walk alongside people, encouraging and helping them as they follow Jesus. For this reason we ‘walk alongside’, ‘walk with’ people of all ages who long to know and grow in their love for the Lord and the ministry He has called them to.

How does it work?

Mentors are mature Christians within Chase Family Church who feel called to this person-to-person ministry and who are approved by the Elders.

Those being mentored will meet with their mentor for an hour or so each month to talk about whatever is current for them, whether it be something they are facing in their daily life, decisions they have to make, or just the challenge of living out the Christian life. Mentoring is not about telling someone else what they have to do but about enabling the other to hear what God is saying to them.

Mentoring will continue as long as the person seeking the support finds it helpful to them in their Christian life and growth. This may be for a short time as one works through something or much longer as one finds benefit from the support, encouragement and challenge of sharing their live and faith journey.

If you would like to have a mentor or volunteer to be trained as one then please speak to your housegroup leader.
