This month’s pick is for children – or adults interested in a good story with a cross-cultural mission flavour! The Jungle Doctor series by missionary doctor Paul White, originally published in the 1950s and 60s, have been revamped for a new generation of 10-12 year olds.
Out of curiosity I gave the first title in the series a re-read - and absolutely loved it! Set in Mvumi Hospital in rural Tanzania and given an authentic feel by a liberal smattering of words in Swahili (don’t worry, there is a glossary!), these books have in fact led many to the mission field. The author has very cleverly worked Gospel truths into the narrative in a most natural way. There is plenty of humour and pathos and the illustrations are definitely a bonus. Educational and inspiring, not to mention a great read. Just who exactly is the brightly-clothed stranger who appears on the compound and what will be his end??
Beware though – you might get hooked – and there are 12 titles in the series!
